Medico Legal Service Overview

What & Who We Treat

EPCS can offer psychological assessment and therapy/counselling for a range of individuals who may be involved in the legal process because of an accident or other personal injury.

Sometimes, after a person has been involved in an accident or witnessed a traumatic event, they may be left with a psychological injury as well as (or instead of) a physical injury. We are often in little doubt as to the effects of a physical injury, however the psychological injuries may not be completely visible to the eye, but they can be just as destructive (if not more so) to a person’s mental wellbeing and ability to function day to day.

The common types of psychological issues that present after an accident etc might be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Depression, Specific Phobias or an Adjustment Disorder, amongst others. However, the general umbrella term that might be used is ‘Trauma’. Trauma manifests itself in different ways for different people and not everyone will experience the same event in the same way. We all have our own perspectives on life and how we perceive events, so one person might become traumatised after an accident (and go on to develop PTSD for example) and another person might not, and there can be many variables in a person’s life which can affect this outcome. In psychological terms, we define PTSD (or a trauma response) as “..a normal reaction to an abnormal event..”

How our Treatment is Delivered

At EPCS, we provide robust, evidence-based therapies which are recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). The recommended psychological treatments for trauma related issues, such as PTSD, include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Therapy sessions are delivered by our experienced team of registered / accredited therapists and Psychologists and we can offer face to face or remote (video/phone sessions) to suit the needs of the individual. As we have a network of therapists, we can also offer face to face sessions at a therapy clinic in geographical location close to your client.

The Referral Process

At EPCS, we are familiar with various referral processes and we can accommodate the needs of our customers. Typically, we might receive an instruction or request for an assessment or block of treatment for a client by email or phone along with a quote for treatment. On acceptance of the quote, we would then gather the necessary details to enable us to proceed with the referral request and make contact with the client to begin their therapy journey.

From the moment we make contact with the client, we look after all of the arrangements for making and attending appointments. We will also provide regular feedback wherever possible both informally via email or phone and formally via written treatment reports.

At the end of the client ‘s treatment we will provide a formal discharge report which will include formal psychometric measures of progress and any further recommendations for treatment or consideration.

As part of our process, we also seek client feedback on their therapy experience with us, which we can share with our referrers for transparency and quality assurance.

A Seamless Experience

For us at Enlightened Psychology & Counselling, delivering a high quality of service is of utmost importance for both our referrers and their (our) clients. Therefore, it is our priority to ensure that the client (and customer) journey is smooth and efficient, from start to finish.

Client Progress & Reporting

In order to monitor our own clinical effectiveness in the treatments we provide, we routinely use formal psychometric measures of client progress at pre/interim/post intervention to gather data on client responsivity and recovery. This helps to inform our own research and evidence base for our treatment efficacy. The results of which are also reported with the client’s treatment progress reports and fed back to our referrers.

Dedicated & Professional

We have a dedicated and highly professional in-house operations and administration team who are the central point for communication and manage all communications between our customers/referrers and our therapists and clients. We also use the latest practice management software, which means all of our client and customer data is stored safely and securely in line with GDPR regulations. This also enables us to keep our referrers up to date on client progress, attendance and to provide and respond timeously to requests for notes and reports.
