Our Assessments

General Mental Health & Functioning Assessments

At Enlightened Psychology & Counselling, our mental health assessments are undertaken with the aim of identifying specific mental health issues and illnesses and their impact on overall functioning and wellbeing.

Common disorders/issues that may be identified are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • OCD
  • Phobias
  • Eating Disorders
  • Psychosis
  • Relational / Personality Issues
  • Bi-polar
    (amongst others)

Typically, a mental health assessment can last for up to 1-1.5 hours. It will involve the Psychologist asking questions about the issues you are struggling with and your wider life, to gain a greater understanding of your situation. You may be asked to talk about your experiences both in the present and in earlier life.  You may also be asked to complete some questionnaires (called psychometrics), either prior to or during the assessment, which can help to support the assessment process.

From here, the Psychologist can then make recommendations for treatment or further assessment and intervention. The Psychologist may also be able to offer their clinical opinion on the diagnostic classification of your issues if you want or require this. Receiving a formal diagnosis for your medical records would normally be undertaken by your GP or an NHS Psychiatrist, however as a Practice, we can offer reports or letters or recommendation for your GP to support the diagnostic process.

Cognitive Assessment

Cognitive assessments may be used to assess memory and intelligence (IQ) and can identify specific areas of strength and weakness in an individual’s functioning.

Assessment of cognitive functioning often last for up to 1.5 hours and involve completing a range of set tasks from vocabulary tasks to mental arithmetic and spatial awareness tasks. Support and instruction is provided during the test and a detailed report follows the assessment with practical advice for adapting ones functioning to suit their needs and abilities.

Assessments may be requested privately by the individual him or herself or they can be funded and requested by organisations. Assessments can be carried out at the Enlightened office in Wellington Square or on site within a place of employment.

Personality Assessment

Personality assessments can offer a comprehensive insight into each individual’s own unique personality profile or make-up. They can also assist in the assessment of personality disorders.

A personality assessment can last up to and beyond 1.5 hours and may involve both answering set questions via a structured questionnaire and also through a face-to-face interview. A detailed report will be provided after assessment with clear and comprehensive feedback.

Assessments may be requested by self-funding, private clients or by referring agencies and organisations.
